Ayurveda in San Diego, CA
Radhika practices Ayurveda in San Diego, CA. Her love for Ayurveda comes from her godmother who introduced her to the subject and had many diverting books on Ayurveda at home. She lived with her godmother for a few years after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, and together they searched through Ayurvedic books for information on herbs, diet, and “doshas.” Ayurveda resonated with Radhika, and she wanted to share what little she knew with everyone she met! At that time, she worked in a raw vegan restaurant and would talk about Ayurveda with the restaurant patrons, the owner, her coworkers, and friends. The restaurant unexpectedly shut down, and Radhika decided to follow her heart and follow the open doors: she wanted to study Reiki and Ayurveda. First, she studied Reiki. Then she ended up at a Panchakarma clinic in LA to have lunch with her godmother and while at lunch was offered a job there as a Panchakarma technician. The practitioner there, Martha Soffer, said she would teach her.
Radhika learned a great deal about Ayurvedic treatments, pulse diagnosis, diet, lifestyle and herbs from Martha in the two years that she worked at the clinic. During the pandemic the clinic was closed, and Radhika completed an MS in Ayurveda from MIU while reading as many Ayurvedic books and ancient texts that she could get her hands on. She also enjoyed taking an Ayurvedic Beauty Care class at Kerala Academy in the fall of 2021, a Marma class in the spring of 2024, and plans to take many more classes in the future. She recognizes that Ayurveda will be a lifetime of studies and adventure.
Her goal is to share the gift of Ayurveda with as many people as possible in her lifetime. It has made a huge difference in her own health and how she feels. In fact, she was cured of an autoimmune condition, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis through Ayurveda, while working at the clinic in LA. She saw many people cured of illnesses when they were told could not be cured while working at the clinic and feels it must be shared! In her personal practice, she specializes in autoimmune conditions, nervous system issues, articular system issues (joints), “beauty care,” and digestive wellness. She has a general practice and takes many different cases on, as well as what she feels is the most important: preventative care. She works with children and adults.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a holistic medicine that originates in India. It is a SPIRIT-MIND-BODY approach to wellness. The rishis or seers received the information about Ayurveda from their visions and that information has been passed down through the generations and written in various ancient texts from Charaka Samhita to Sushruta Samhita, and many more. The key concept behind Ayurveda is to live in tune with the cycles and laws of nature. Some ideas that align with this are arising with the morning sun and eating seasonal, local foods. Because we are each individual, we don’t all want to eat the same foods, do the same exercises, take the same herbs, etc. : Ayurveda is individualized to the person. Your Ayurvedic practitioner will analyze the elements (earth, water, space, air, and fire) at play in your general constitution, your digestive fire, your mind, and your imbalance, then determine the best diet and lifestyle practices for you.
Another key point to the Ayurvedic approach is discovering the root cause of an issue and removing it. Removing the cause or causes of an imbalance are essential to healing. You can take herbs to help with some problem, but the problem will come back as soon as you stop taking the herbs (or whatever else you might be taking to mask an issue). If you remove the cause and restore your body to balance, you will become attuned with the cycles of nature and with your body once again. In a state of balance, your body always knows what it needs! How do imbalances occur in the first place? In those moments when we ignore what our body is telling us and we build a habit around ignore the self, we set the grounds for imbalances to occur (eg eating when you are already full, staying up late when you are exhausted, etc.).
